"Tesla Bot can become a great buddy like C3PO or R2D2. It can develop its own personality over time, not all robots are the same. Personality can be changed to suit the owner. or whatever you want," tech billionaire Elon Musk asserted on AI researcher Lex Fridman's podcast this week.
The two robots he mentioned are intelligent robots with personality and can communicate like humans in the Star Wars series.
Musk announced the Tesla Bot during the company's AI Day event in August 2020. Many people are optimistic, believing that Tesla Bot will change lives in the future and be a desirable product. However, others doubt Musk's project is just a joke.
The US billionaire announced the product will be on the market in 2022, which means that Tesla has to solve the problem of general artificial intelligence (AGI) with new human resources recruited by the company for a few months. Meanwhile, even the most optimistic experts believe that the technology world can only handle AGI in at least 30 years.
"I'm not against Musk doing research in this area, but it's not good to exaggerate it," said Carl Berry, a lecturer in robotics engineering at the University of Central Lancashire (UK). He said it is unlikely that Tesla will launch humanoid robots within a year, let alone the ability to build characters for them.
"I can say for sure, it will take more than 10 years before a humanoid robot, made by any company, can go to the grocery store and shop on its own," said Raj Rajkumar, a professor of engineering. electricity and computers at Carnegie Mellon University (USA) told Reuters.
Tesla Bot is described as 172 cm high, 56 kg in weight, made from light materials, can travel at a maximum speed of 8 km/h, carry 20 kg of goods, and lift 68 kg. The robot head integrates a camera used in Tesla electric vehicles, allowing it to sense its surroundings and a screen to display information.
