Two 21- and 24-year-olds applied for jobs at Amazon just to play before the latest version of The Legend of Zelda.
According to Shūkan Bunshun, the two did not know each other, but applied for a job at an Amazon subcontractor in Japan for a month, then quit. The goal is to play before the sequel to The Legend of Zelda, called Tears of the Kingdom. Amazon is one of the game distributors on its e-commerce platform.
Tears of the Kingdom is the sequel to Nintendo's Breath of the Wild in 2017, available on Nintendo Switch and Wii U. The game has sold nearly 20 million copies during its time on the market and the new version is also highly anticipated.
Speaking to police on May 11, the day before The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom was released, the 21-year-old admitted to deliberately applying for a job in order to steal the game to play early. He was arrested after taking a few days off work and staying home playing games. Meanwhile, not only did he steal the game, the 24-year-old also stole many other devices at work and sold them.
After being interrogated, both were released but had to pay all they took.
According to a representative of Amazon's contractor, the situation of applying for jobs to play games early also happened when the "hot" product was about to launch. The company will be more resolute in controlling employees to prevent similar cases in the future.
The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom belongs to the action-adventure game genre and is currently only available on Nintendo Switch. In the first three days of release, the game sold over 10 million copies.
